COUNTERFLOW Review & Gameplay Guide

I just spent the last few hours playing COUNTERFLOW, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the experience. I went into it without knowing too much, other than it was some kind of puzzle game, and I have to say, it's definitely unique. The game drops you into this world where you have to navigate through a series of increasingly complex levels, using these little creatures that can move in different directions. It sounds simple, but trust me, it gets tough fast.

At first, I was a bit frustrated with the controls. The creatures can move in four different directions, but you have to use this weird momentum system to get them to go where you want. It's hard to explain, but basically, you have to tap on the screen to make them move, and then they'll keep going in that direction until they hit something. It's a bit like those old slide puzzles, where you have to think a few steps ahead to get the pieces to line up right. It took me a few levels to get the hang of it, but once I did, it started to feel really natural.

The levels themselves are pretty cleverly designed. They're all these little mazes with different obstacles and power-ups, and you have to use the creatures to collect all the tokens in each level. The twist is that some of the creatures will move in opposite directions, so you have to use them to block or redirect the others to get them to the tokens. It's a real brain-twister, but in a good way. I found myself getting really into it, trying to figure out the optimal path to take to get all the tokens.

One thing that I didn't love about COUNTERFLOW is the graphics and sound design. The game has this weird, retro aesthetic that's kind of cool, but it also feels a bit cheap. The sound effects are pretty basic, and the music is just this repetitive loop that gets annoying after a while. It's not a huge deal, but it would be nice to see a bit more polish in this area. That being said, the gameplay is so engaging that I found myself not even noticing the graphics and sound after a while.

As I played through more levels, I started to notice that the game has a really good difficulty curve. It starts off easy, but each level introduces new challenges and obstacles that require you to think differently. I never felt like the game was getting too hard too fast, but at the same time, I was always feeling like I was being challenged. It's a great feeling, being stretched to the limit but still feeling like you can overcome it. I'm not sure how many levels are in the game, but I'm definitely going to keep playing to find out.

Overall, I'm really glad I gave COUNTERFLOW a try. It's a game that's all about the gameplay, and it delivers in spades. If you're a fan of puzzle games, or just looking for something new and challenging, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. Just be prepared to put in a bit of time to get the hang of the controls, and don't be afraid to think outside the box. With a bit of practice, you'll be navigating these levels like a pro, and it's a really satisfying feeling.
