Find Ball Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last hour playing Find Ball, and I have to say, it's a game that's left me feeling pretty conflicted. On the one hand, the concept is super simple - you're just a character who has to find a ball in a series of increasingly complex levels. It sounds easy, and at first, it is. The first few levels are a breeze, and I found myself thinking, "okay, this is cute, but where's the challenge?" But as I progressed, I started to realize just how tricky this game can be.
The levels are all procedurally generated, which means that no two playthroughs are ever the same. At first, I thought this would be a major strength, but in practice, it can be kind of frustrating. Sometimes I'd get a level that was just way too easy, and other times I'd get one that seemed impossible. I'm not sure if that's just a result of the random generation, or if the game is actually trying to throw me curveballs, but it definitely kept me on my toes.
One thing I will say is that the graphics and sound design in Find Ball are really charming. The game has this super retro vibe that's just really appealing, and the sound effects are all these satisfying little beeps and boops that make you feel like you're playing an old Game Boy game. It's definitely a game that's going for a retro aesthetic, and for the most part, it succeeds. But at the same time, I couldn't help feeling like the game was missing something - maybe a stronger narrative, or more varied gameplay mechanics.
As I played through Find Ball, I started to feel like I was just going through the motions. The game doesn't really have any real sense of progression or escalation - you're just finding the ball, over and over, in slightly different contexts. It's not like there are new obstacles or challenges that are introduced as you go - it's just more of the same, but slightly harder. And that's what ultimately made me lose interest. I mean, I'm not asking for a ton of complexity or depth, but a little bit of variety would have gone a long way in keeping me engaged.
Despite all my criticisms, I do have to say that Find Ball is a game that's hard to put down. There's just something about the simple, repetitive gameplay that's really addictive. I found myself playing for way longer than I expected, just because I wanted to see what the next level would be like. And I think that's a testament to the game's design - it's just really well-tuned to be this quick, snackable experience that you can play in short bursts. So if you're looking for something to play on your commute, or just need something to kill a few minutes, Find Ball might be worth checking out.
Overall, I'd say that Find Ball is a game that's worth playing, but it's not without its flaws. It's a game that's all about finding a simple, repetitive joy in its gameplay, and if that sounds appealing to you, then you'll probably love it. But if you're looking for something with a bit more substance or depth, then you might want to look elsewhere. For me, it was a fun little diversion, but it's not a game that I'm going to be thinking about for weeks to come.
