Real Cosmos Review & Gameplay Guide
So I just spent the last week playing Real Cosmos, and I have to say, it's been a wild ride. I picked it up on a whim, not really knowing what to expect, but the name and the space-themed cover art caught my attention. I mean, who doesn't love a good space game, right? The game starts off pretty slow, with a bunch of tutorials and introductory missions that teach you the basics of navigation and combat. I was a bit worried at first that it was going to be one of those games that holds your hand the whole time, but luckily, once you get past the intro, the game opens up and you're free to explore the galaxy.
One of the things that really stands out about Real Cosmos is the sheer scale of the game world. I mean, this thing is huge - there are hundreds of star systems to visit, each with their own unique planets, asteroid fields, and other points of interest. And the best part is, you can visit all of them, whenever you want. Want to fly to the edge of the galaxy and see what's out there? Go for it. Want to explore a particular asteroid field and see if you can find any valuable resources? You can do that too. The freedom is pretty amazing, and it's something that I think really sets Real Cosmos apart from other games in the genre.
Now, I know some people are going to say that the graphics in Real Cosmos are a bit dated, and yeah, I can see that. The textures and models aren't always the most detailed, and some of the effects can look a bit cheesy. But you know what? I don't really care. The game's got a certain charm to it, a certain retro feel that I think actually adds to the experience. And besides, the game runs like a dream on my mid-range PC, so I'm not complaining. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning - it's this awesome mix of electronic and orchestral tracks that perfectly capture the sense of wonder and exploration that the game is all about.
As for the gameplay, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The combat is pretty solid, with a good variety of ships and weapons to choose from, and the AI is challenging without being frustrating. But some of the other systems, like the trading and crafting, feel a bit underdeveloped. I mean, I get that they're not the main focus of the game, but it feels like they could be fleshed out a bit more. And the UI can be a bit clunky at times, with some awkward menu navigation and confusing button mappings. But overall, I'd say the good outweighs the bad, and I've had a really great time playing the game.
One thing that I do wish the game had more of is a sense of story or narrative. I mean, there's a bit of a backstory to the game, but it's not really developed very much, and you're mostly left to your own devices to figure out what's going on. I'm not saying that every game needs a strong narrative, but it would be nice to have something to tie everything together. As it is, the game feels a bit like a sandbox - which is great, don't get me wrong, but it's not always clear what you're working towards or what the ultimate goal is.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend Real Cosmos to fans of space games or anyone looking for a fun, laid-back experience. It's not perfect, but it's got a lot of heart, and I think the developers have done a great job of creating a game that's all about exploration and discovery. And who knows, maybe with a bit more support and some updates, the game could really become something special. As it is, I'm happy to have spent the time playing it, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the developers take it from here.
