SciWhy Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last few hours playing SciWhy and I've got to say, it's been a pretty mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I love the concept of the game - it's all about solving science-based puzzles to progress through the levels, which sounds right up my alley. I mean, who doesn't love a good brain teaser, right? But on the other hand, the execution just didn't quite live up to my expectations.
First of all, the graphics are pretty basic. I'm not expecting a AAA title or anything, but some of the environments and characters look like they were ripped straight from a game 10 years ago. It's not a huge deal, but it did take me out of the experience a bit. The sound design is also pretty lacking - the music is super repetitive and the sound effects are just kind of... there. It's not like it's bad or anything, it's just really unremarkable.
But like I said, the concept of the game is really cool. I loved the idea of using science to solve puzzles, and some of the puzzles themselves are actually pretty clever. There's this one level where you have to use the principles of optics to redirect a laser beam, and it was actually really challenging and rewarding to figure out. The problem is, these moments of brilliance are pretty few and far between. A lot of the puzzles are just kind of... easy, you know? I mean, I'm not a genius or anything, but I was able to breeze through most of the levels without even breaking a sweat.
One thing that really annoyed me, though, was the lack of feedback. Sometimes I'd be stuck on a puzzle for ages, and I'd have no idea if I was even on the right track. There's no hint system or anything, so you're just kind of left to flail around until you stumble upon the solution. It's frustrating, because I felt like I was wasting a lot of time just trying to figure out what the game wanted me to do. And don't even get me started on the "story" - it's basically just a bunch of vague sciency nonsense that doesn't really make any sense.
Despite all my complaints, I did actually have some fun playing SciWhy. Like I said, some of the puzzles are really clever, and it's always satisfying to figure out a tough one. The game's also pretty short, so it's not like you're committing to a huge time investment or anything. If you're a fan of puzzle games or science, you might get a kick out of it. But if you're looking for something with a lot of depth or polish, you might want to look elsewhere.
Overall, I'd say SciWhy is a decent but not outstanding game. It's got some great ideas, but the execution just isn't quite there. With a bit more development and refinement, this could have been a really great game. As it stands, though, it's just kind of... average. If you're curious, it might be worth checking out, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone.
