Woody Cross Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last few hours playing Woody Cross and I have to say, it's been a pretty wild ride. I went into this game not really knowing what to expect, I'd seen a few screenshots and watched a brief trailer, but that was about it. The game's premise seemed interesting enough, you play as this wooden guy who has to navigate through these increasingly difficult levels, using his, uh, wooden limbs to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies.
At first, I was a bit put off by the game's graphics, they're not exactly mind-blowing, but as I played on, I started to appreciate the charm of the wooden world and its quirky characters. The gameplay itself is pretty straightforward, you run, you jump, you swing from hooks, it's all pretty standard platformer fare, but there's something about it that just feels right. The controls are tight, the level design is clever, and the difficulty curve is spot on. I found myself getting more and more invested in the game as I progressed, eager to see what new challenges lay ahead.
One thing that really stood out to me was the game's sound design. The music is catchy and upbeat, and the sound effects are superb. The way the wooden protagonist creaks and groans as he moves around is just fantastic, it adds a whole new level of immersion to the game. I also loved the way the enemies sound, they're all these weird, wooden creatures that make these strange noises when you attack them, it's really quite satisfying. The only thing that gets a bit annoying is the protagonist's occasional vocal outbursts, they're a bit too loud and can be a bit grating at times.
As I played through the game, I encountered a few minor issues with the physics engine. There were a few times where I got stuck on a piece of scenery, or where the protagonist would clip through a wall, but these incidents were few and far between. For the most part, the game runs smoothly, and the physics engine does a great job of simulating the wooden world. I was also impressed by the variety of levels, each one has its own unique theme and challenges, and there are some really clever ideas on display.
Overall, I'd say Woody Cross is a solid, if not spectacular, platformer. It's not going to win any awards for originality, but it's a fun, challenging game that's well worth playing. The game's charm and character shine through, and the clever level design and tight controls make it a joy to play. If you're a fan of platformers, or just looking for something a bit different, I'd definitely recommend giving Woody Cross a try. Just be prepared for a bit of frustration, some of the later levels can get pretty tough, but the sense of satisfaction you'll get from beating them is well worth it.
I'm not sure how much replay value Woody Cross has, I've already played through the main campaign, and I'm not sure if I'll be going back to try and find all the hidden collectibles. That being said, I did enjoy my time with the game, and I think it's definitely worth the price of admission. If you're looking for a fun, lighthearted platformer to play through, Woody Cross is a great choice. It's not perfect, but it's a great way to spend a few hours, and it's definitely a game that will put a smile on your face.
